Chinese Food Ordering Phrases for Travelers
Show the Chinese text while pointing to the menu. Pinyin helps you try saying the phrase; showing the written question can help when pronunciation is difficult.
At the table

Make the request specific
“Less chili” is a preference, not a guarantee that food is mild. “No meat” does not automatically exclude animal stock, seafood or other ingredients. Explain the ingredients you avoid, and ask whether the kitchen can adapt the dish.
If the restaurant cannot confirm an allergy requirement, choose another meal or restaurant. These phrases support communication and cannot guarantee safe preparation.
